Venclexta (generic name: venetoclax) is an oral medication used to treat certain blood cancers, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL), and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). It is available in 10 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg tablet strengths.

šŸ’Š Tablet Strengths and Appearance

  • 10 mg: Pale yellow, round, film-coated tablets.

  • 50 mg: Beige, oblong, film-coated tablets.

  • 100 mg: Pale yellow, oblong, film-coated tablets.

šŸ“¦ Dosing Overview

Venclexta dosing typically begins with a gradual increase (ramp-up) to minimize the risk of tumor lysis syndrome (TLS), a potential side effect. The specific dosing schedule depends on the condition being treated and any concurrent medications.

Ā  Ā  Venclexta uses

Venclexta is used to treat adults with:

  • chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) or small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL)
  • newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who are 75 years of age or older or who have other medical conditions that prevent the use of standard chemotherapy.
    • For AML, Venclexta is used in combination with azacitidine, decitabine, or low-dose cytarabine.

It is not known if Venclexta is safe and effective in children.

What are the side effects of Venclexta?

TheĀ most common side effectsĀ of VenclextaĀ are:

  • Laboratory test changes, such as low white cell counts, low platelet counts, and low red blood cell counts
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Upper respiratory tract infections (such as a cold)
  • Cough
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Tiredness
  • Swelling of your arms, legs, hands, and feet.

Other side effects that are common when Venclexta is used to treat AML include:

  • Constipation
  • Fever

āš ļø Important Safety Information

  • Tumor Lysis Syndrome (TLS): A serious condition caused by the rapid breakdown of cancer cells. Preventative measures, including hydration and monitoring, are essential during the initiation phase.

  • Drug Interactions: Venclexta is metabolized by the CYP3A enzyme. Strong CYP3A inhibitors (e.g., certain antifungals, antibiotics) can increase venetoclax levels, necessitating dose adjustments.

  • Administration: Take Venclexta with food and water at the same time each day. Do not chew, crush, or break the tablets.
