1. Composition (Salt Details)

  • Active Ingredient: Amlodipine (as Amlodipine Besylate).

  • Strength: 5 mg.

  • Mechanism: It works by blocking calcium from entering the muscle cells of your heart and blood vessels. This relaxes and widens the blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily and reducing the workload on the heart.

2. Primary Uses

  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): To lower blood pressure and reduce the long-term risk of strokes and heart attacks.

  • Angina Pectoris: Used to prevent and manage chronic stable chest pain.

  • Vasospastic Angina: Specifically for Prinzmetal’s or “variant” angina caused by spasms in the coronary arteries.

3. Common Side Effects

Most side effects are mild and often diminish as your body adjusts to the medicine.

  • Edema: Swelling of the ankles or feet (very common).

  • Neurological: Headache, dizziness, or sleepiness.

  • Gastrointestinal: Nausea, abdominal pain, or upset stomach.

  • Circulatory: Flushing (a sense of warmth in the face/neck) or palpitations.

  • General: Unusual tiredness or fatigue.

Warning: Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe allergic reactions (rash, swelling of the face/tongue) or worsening chest pain.

4. Dosage & Administration

  • Typical Starting Dose: Usually 5 mg taken once daily. Depending on your response, a doctor may increase this to 10 mg.

  • Timing: It can be taken with or without food. It is best to take it at the same time every day to maintain consistent levels in your blood.

  • Duration: This is typically a long-term treatment. Do not stop taking it abruptly without consulting your doctor, as this can cause a sudden spike in blood pressure.

5. Important Precautions

  • Grapefruit Juice: Avoid consuming grapefruit or its juice, as it can increase the concentration of Amlodipine in your blood and lead to severe side effects.

  • Alcohol: Limit alcohol intake, as it can enhance the blood pressure-lowering effect, potentially causing fainting or extreme dizziness.

  • Liver/Kidney Health: Inform your doctor if you have liver disease, as the drug is processed extensively by the liver.

  • Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: Consult a healthcare provider before use, as safety during pregnancy is not fully established.
